Grosvenor Casino, Great Yarmouth, Marine Parade
I’ve been to casinos before, but my regular haunt is the Grosvenor Casino at Great Yarmouth, located on the Norfolk coast, opposite the Wellington Pier. It makes for a lovely change of scene and you don’t need to spend a fortune. I know what you are thinking, it doesn’t sound possible to stay at a hotel and have a good evening at the casino and meal for less than £100.
It’s the reason I keep coming back for more.
Living in the small town of March, in the Fens, we love a trip to the casino and it’s ideal to meet up with family and friends. In fact, that’s what I often do with my two brothers. However, the twist to making a good trip is that we don’t leave until 7pm getting to Great Yarmouth at 9:30pm.
It all sounds very rushed but it is a brilliant way to save time especially if you are working. Ideal for a Friday night and return Saturday morning.
The point being, we make the most of an evening or long night (whichever you choose) and you’d be surprised how micro planning actually adds to the experience. We have enjoyed cold winter’s nights and balmy summer evenings. If there are three of you staying at the Carlton, Nelson or Embassy Hotel, all walking distance from the Grosvenor Casino at Marine Parade, you won’t be paying more than £75, and probably less (often breakfast included) so just £25 a piece. There are more expensive hotels including Andover House if you want a touch of class. They have a brilliant restaurant called The Copper Kitchen that’s well worth a visit whether resident or not.
The casino is literally 50 metres from each of these hotels so you have the luxury of a short walk. It’s a stone’s throw from the beach if you fancy an early-morning stroll and basically on the Golden Mile, so lots of other hotels, restaurant and shops to peruse.
We simply take our time travelling from our home town by train changing at Ely, Norwich and a couple of hours later (probably 2hr 30mins) we arrive at the Norfolk coast. I always enjoy the Bittern Line, although you don’t see many bitterns by night, perhaps an owl if you are lucky. There is something appealing about travelling into the night with a fun time ahead. A little gamble and fraternizing with Lady Luck. My aunt Rose loved to bet 29 black.

So we arrive at the hotel (best to inform them if you will be late for check-in) put our hand luggage in the room and wander around the corner to the Grosvenor Casino. If you have never been to their Yarmouth premises, you will be in for a surprise as this Grade II Listed building really is one of the most attractive brick-and-mortar casinos I have visited. Truth be fair, I haven’t been to many (Luton and Nottingham) but you won’t be disappointed.
Opening times Grosvenor Casino – Great Yarmouth: 1pm – 4am.
Shaddingfield Lodge (Grosvenor Casino) is a beautiful Victorian premises built by J Cudden ESQ in 1865, designed by Morant. In fact, it was frequented on a number of occasions by the Prince of Wales, later to be crowned King Edward VIII. It was later purchased by local brewery Lacon’s in 1953 as a licensed premises. Pretty sure it was used as a Casino from 2011.
It’s a beautiful building and a far cry from these modern casinos you find in city centres.
What makes an evening is to enjoy a meal at the Grosvenor Casino restaurant, they also have live music and tribute acts. As you can see by the photo it is a truly elegant room with high ceilings, decorative plaster work including beautiful ceiling roses, magnificent bay windows and a comfortable lounge area with well-stocked bar which reminds me of an old-style saloon. Plenty of bottles of fancy champagne if you have a big win or enjoying a special occasion. The menu offers a variety of dishes: starters, main courses and desserts. Also, the prices are excellent. What you get for free is an experience of dining in a room which literally tells a story. I have been to this sublime restaurant for years and it really does make for the perfect setting then head downstairs to the gaming room.
The gaming room is a good size with a bar, plenty of slots, betting terminals and live play with dealers including three roulette tables, 3-card poker and blackjack. Non alcoholic drinks are complimentary. The gaming room has a nice feel about it. If you pick your times you can have a quiet bet or you can enjoy the buzz of a busy setting. It has well trained and attentive staff. The clientele range from your average gambler to a few bigger bettors. I’ve never seen any trouble but there is security who are helpful and friendly.
I’d be the first to say that I’m no big spender when it comes to the casino. The whole point for me is enjoying a night out with a good meal, a little bit of betting, pint or two and if I come away with a few extra pounds in my pocket then it’s truly been a splendid evening. As always, bet responsibly. It pays to follow Grosvenor Casino social media and be on their mailing list. I usually coincide my visits with promotions such as match bets or drink vouchers. In truth, if you bet small stakes, you are odds on to have a good night. I generally bet roulette on the tables (sometime terminals depending on my mood) and odd times 3-card poker. I hardly ever bet more than £50 (all small stake chips of £1 or 50p). And my approach to betting a single number on roulette means I’ll never be burning through my cash. In fact, if my number comes up a couple of times I will be leaving with a profit.
It’s good fun people watching, too. You never know who you will meet at the casino as it is a melting pot of gambling souls (not everyone gambles some are just happy watching). I love to hear the cheer of the crowd when someone hits on a winning streak.
With the meal in the restaurant and time on the gaming tables, we won’t stay at the casino more than four hours and I’m ready for bed. Thankfully, that’s just around the corner. The reception will call you a taxi. Also, there is a lift to help with access. It’s a friendly place and somewhere I have always enjoyed and will be venturing that way this year, especially when the horse racing meetings begin.
Our gambling night at the Grosvenor Casino is always fun. A brilliant Friday night and Saturday morning.
The next morning we have the option of breakfast at the hotel or walk along the front to see what catches our eye. Many times we have decided on the Ocean Hotel, which is comfortable and serves a classier breakfast than most at a good price. I love their eggs benedict and assortment of teas. I really need to stay at the Ocean Hotel as it looks very stylish and rooms with a sea view.
If you want to make the most of your time then head to Great Yarmouth and enjoy the Grosvenor Casino.
You will enjoy your night and day.
